Repairs to Inflatable Craft

Inflatable Boat Repairs

Inflatables will need repairs at sometime or another. Even though they are designed to withstand the roughest waters, overtime they will need some sort of repair. You may attempt any small repairs or the addition of small accessories, if you follow the factory gluing instructions closely. The factory instructions will tell you what your boat fabric is made of and what method you will use to repair it. Several different forms of liquid rubber are usually used to limit damage from abrasion and to seal pinholes. Your owners manual may suggest a brand of glue to use.

Your owners manual will also inform you of what repair tools you will need to make the repairs. Utilizing the proper repair tools, glue and patches will keep your boat in sailing shape. Inflatables are constructed of material that provides the strength and waterproofing for the craft. The most common coatings used are Hypalon, Neoprene, or copolymers like PVC. It is important to know that adhesives that bond to Hypalon do not bond to PVC.

If the tear or hole in your inflatable is bigger than an inch, in the air chambers, or within two inches from a seam, then both internal and external patches are required to repair the damaged area. This repair should be done by a professional repair technician. A quick patch repair will solve your problem temporarily. A durable repair should be done in a certified repair facility by a certified technician.
